Regional variants of English
The most commonly discussed regional differences are between British and American English but variations exist in other English-speaking countries such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand. As aspects of spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary all vary, changing –our to –or won't suffice. In the same way as appropriate translators need to be chosen for Spain and South America, writers from one English-speaking country will need local knowledge to be able to write text that will sound natural to readers from another. However, if the aim is solely to ensure that information is conveyed clearly and accurately, understanding the main differences may be enough.
INTECOM conducted a research project into regional variations in English. This was intended to promote a form of international English suited to mixed audiences but is most useful for its work in identifying the variations. Reading the report provides a good overview of the issues to consider.
