IBM

IBM User Technologies is part of the IBM Hursley Laboratory. Established
in 1958, the IBM Hursley Laboratory (situated near Winchester in Hampshire)
houses around 1500 employees, making it the largest software development laboratory
outside the United States. Key parts of the IBM software portfolio are developed
there: transaction processing, messaging middleware and telephony. Hursley
is also home to the IBM Java Technology Centre.
The members of the User Technologies (UT) department are committed to making
IBM products the easiest to use in the industry. They have been known as technical
writers and information developers, but developing information is only one
part of the job of making IBM products easy to use. The UT staff develop information
in SGML and XML for delivery in print and in online information centres, but
today's IBM UT professional is also likely to create integrated user assistance
(for example, wizards, help, tutorials and quick tours), web pages or customer
demonstrations.
The Hursley UT department has around 100 staff, including information developers,
visual designers, planners for manufacturing and translation, and specialists
in user-centred design.
